“We will build of brick and stone and slate, and we will provide not merely for a house, but for comfort, elegance and social gratification.”
- Hugh Chisholm
Hugh Chisholm saw what could be and what is seen today by many, the infinite uniqueness, beauty, and bounty in the area known now as Rumford, ME. Mr. Chisholm was a bold and ingenuitive American industrialist who upon this wildly undeveloped rural confluence of waterways in the late 19th century. With dreams of grande our for the elevation oscillating conversion of tributaries and watersheds already funneling spectacular mammalian wildlife, Chisholm headed up direction of the national railroad network to extend the funnel entry to the rapidly growing population of New England bound laborers. By way of vibrant industry and continually expanding demand for widespread communication in the young republic of America, groundwork laid by the Sons of Liberty, Chisholm and his Oxford Paper Company set his sights on building what could be considered the most grandiose and accommodating industrial project in the the country at the time.
In short order, with a mind and heart to caretake the constitutional vision of community to which he was federally bound and directly contrary to the poorly constructed and unkempt mill community developments in Massachusetts, Chisholm constructed Strathglass Park and the Rumford Falls Power Company. Strathglass, now a distinct New England historical district who’s genesis culminates with a brilliant exhibition of turn of the 19th century hand crafted stone masonry, was designed and constructed to propagate the millworker and their family’s comfort and lifestyle with stunning and expansive brick duplexes, crawling, finely manicured lawns, parks, trees, and pathways. In addition Chisholm’s inexpensive rents and severe discounts with the hydroelectric from his plant made the project one of the most attractive and utilitarian in the country at the time.
With Chisholm’s brilliant design of family and stability based entrepreneurial development the town of Rumford bloomed into one of the most sustainable American family destinations in New England.
Under this spirit, fueled by the innovation and dreamworks of Chisholm and the callused and adventurous energy of the new area’s working class, we introduce Brick & Stone, settled humbly in the shadows of the past. With the back drop of the stone facade, original interior brick walls, locally hand crafted artisanal lumber and blacksmithed furniture and fixtures, the area sub contractors dialing in the comfort of the dining room, we at Brick & Stone have build this establishment for the town of Rumford, by the town of Rumford for all family and friends to enjoy. Our menu offers an affordable and deliciously crafted New England American fare, with exciting specials to enjoy with loved ones. Our Take Out out and Dine In models marry the River Valley area’s need for a quick, delicious, and affordable family meal with a fine dining night out in a comfortable and rustically elegant setting, one similar to that you would find shortly after the town’s industrial inception.
The aspirations of Chisholm and the town’s founders, Lord Rumford and beyond, desire to accommodate and cultivate the sense of ‘comfort, elegance, and social gratification’ live on in every brick, stone, piece of lumber, and steel we have erected in order to capture the heart and spirit of the town.
If we were to extend out our name it would be Brick & Stone & Steel & Wood, because that is what this town is about, his is who we are. From our family and friends to yours, we graciously thank you for your patronage and hope to see you here again soon.
